The more I've fallen in love with swing and lindy hop, the more I discover that the true soul of our dance
is the music which gave rise to lindy hop. As a DJ, I love to play music from the bands to which people began
dancing lindy hop. Some bands that always move me and are sure to be found in my sets include Duke Ellington,
Count Basie, Chick Webb, Jimmie Lunceford, Fletcher Henderson, and Benny Goodman. I DJ regularly in my local
scene of Buffalo, NY and have DJed in Columbia, SC, Rochester, NY, and Greenville SC. Some events I have DJed
include Solomon Douglas Workshops in Rochester and Swingbuffalo's Workshop Weekend.
Yossef counts himself as easily within the top ten swing dance DJs in Nashville, and not only
because there's a limited pool of approximately ... ten. He started DJing in mid-2008 as an excuse
to collect whatever danceable jazz music he could get his hands on. When he realized that DJing
part of a dance tends to get you in for free, he was hooked. Yossef views DJing as yet another f
orm of expression in the swing dance arena, a way to enjoy and entertain, a way to say "Check out
what I found in the used CD bin yesterday. Can you believe someone sold this?"As a dancer, he knows the joy of hearing just the right music that makes you want to keep on dancing. As a DJ, he's happiest when creating that experience for the crowd on the floor. And since he continually acquires new music as a means of achieving this goal, he can often be found hunched over his laptop with headphones clamped over his ears, tapping out the BPM of or otherwise categorizing recently-found tracks.
Breanna likes her music the way she likes her mashed potatoes: lumpy and with just enough gravy.
That is, if lumpy is a metaphor for chunky rhythm and gravy means it's got plenty of soul.
Of course, small combo red potatoes are a nice way to spice up a dance meal, and you know a
baked big band potato will always be a delicious staple. Can you go wrong with potatoes?
Breanna doesn't think so, and she feels the same way about good music. Her one goal as a DJ
is to fill dancers (and the dance floor) up with great energy--and she's left many an audience
with their hunger sated.
